Leveraging mobile devices in training
Mobile devices in training are now a common part of work life. That is a big reason our software’s registration forms and pages are mobile friendly. Unless you’ve been hiding under a moai on Easter Island (or another megalith of your choice), you know this. Smartphones and tablets are just as prevalent in training rooms as PowerPoint and daydreaming. Mobile devices are a necessity in many instances because they help facilitate or enhance instruction.
If your training program has made—or is considering making—mobile devices a formal part of training, it’s important to occasionally review or plan for issues that may arise.
- Create a policy
Issues of security and privacy will always be with us. If you haven’t already, develop a policy that specifies considerations like what devices will be permitted, what apps will be allowed, and what determines acceptable use. - Develop a security protocol
If your policy allows access to the organization’s network, several security measures must be in place to limit security and legal risks regarding mobile devices in training. Among these: The individual’s devices must be password-protected. Also, corporate info should never be stored locally. Additionally, devices must support the ability to be remotely wiped should they be lost or stolen. - Determine functionality
In broader terms, the use of mobile devices in training may be as simple as an employee using her phone to access company e-mail, contact, and calendar information. Or it could be as complex as logging in to your company LMS or other technology platforms. It could be accessing online resources, an app, or social media that support the training. You determine what is going to be made accessible on individual devices after weighing potential benefits versus costs, capabilities, and security/legal risks. - Build Awareness
For many of us, our mobile devices are like an extra appendage. They’re a part of us. With mobile devices having achieved omnipresence, promote the importance, perhaps necessity, of using mobile devices to access both registration for training and the training itself. Inform constituents about the offering, how to sign up for it on their devices, and how to access the training. - Get feedback
Making resources and tools accessible to individuals’ mobile devices won’t do much for productivity or cost reduction if no one is taking advantage. The best way to match what mobile devices in training can deliver to what trainees want is to constantly get their feedback. And, with your connection to their devices, you have an easy means to gather such input.
